Your Yucatan duck hunting adventure begins when you arrive at either the Merida or Cancun international airport. Upon arrival you will be met by our staff and taken to the small fishing village of Celestun (a two-hour drive from Merida or three and a half hour drive from Cancun). Located on the north shore of the Yucatan, the Celestun area was considered by the Mayans to be the most bountiful hunting land. The brackish water in this area holds plenty of food, attracting millions of ducks. Because there is very little hunting pressure, blue-winged teal decoy beautifully and with little hesitation. Blue-winged teal are fast flying and are often regarded as being the sportiest ducks to hunt. Yucatan duck hunting is always action-packed – with both morning and afternoon outings, you can expect the duck hunt of a lifetime
A typical day of duck hunting in the Yucatan starts around 4:00 AM, with drives to the hunting grounds in the dark of morning. Upon arrival at the water’s edge your guides will greet you with the plan for the morning duck hunt. Every hunter gets their own guide - one hunter and one guide per boat. Like gondoliers, the guides pole the hunters’ small jon boats to blinds situated in prime honey holes. Once the boat is secured in the mangroves, you can elect to hunt with a partner or by yourself. Snacks, sandwiches and beverages are always provided to keep hunters comfortable.
The ducks come fast to the decoys as the eastern sky begins to lighten. Hunters must be prepared for ducks flying in all directions – passing, decoying and high overhead…the presentations are endless. The morning duck hunt normally ends around 10:00 AM. After a trip back to town for a lunch and a siesta, you and your guides will decide on what time you would like to head out for the afternoon duck hunt.
Hunters are accommodated in a quaint hotel in the small town of Celestun. Situated right on the beach, a room with a view is all but guaranteed. Duck hunting groups are normally kept at 10 hunters or fewer. You will eat at one of several local open-air restaurants, typically serving fresh coastal Mexican seafood. It’s important to note that this is rural Mexico at its most pristine; the Cancun crowds have not tarnished the culture, the people or the beaches in this special part of the Yucatan.
